IOSH Managing Safety
Five-day course, delivered as a block, or split block / day release basis. It is designed for supervisors and managers (from any organisation) who have a responsibility to manage efficiently and effectively in compliance with both their organisation’s safety policy and with the increasingly complex requirements of health and safety legislation. The course will concentrate on training participants to apply sound managerial principles to occupational health and safety issues.
Aims:

To show how health and safety can be integrated into the manager’s other responsibilities.

To understand how accidents happen.

To give an understanding of special procedures required.

To make managers aware of legal responsibilities.

To improve communication skills.

To make managers aware of the range of hazards likely
to appear and the type of action required.
Course Content:
The course consists of seven elements which can be tailored to meet the requirements of individual organisations these include:

Safety management systems: the role of risk assessment and how safety management links with other aspects of management, legal requirements and the social environment.

Reactive monitoring: which incidents must be reported, checking that reports are made, recording reported incidents, conducting investigations, recording results and analysing records.

Risk assessment and risk control: including making an inventory of sources of hazards, identifying hazards associated with each source, rating risks, selecting, workplace precautions and recording results of risk assessments and reviews.

Preparing and using active monitoring checklists: implementing schedules for active monitoring, recording results and analysing records.

Safety policy: organising and conducting a management review of the safety management system and preparing for a health and safety audit.

Relevant legislation: obtaining advice and guidance

Managing the sources of hazards.
