Safety Solutions (UK) Ltd runs two schemes to enable candidates to gain full chartered membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and full Corporate Member of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM). IOSH with over 30,000 members is widely recognised as the principle professional body but IIRSM provides an additional alternative qualification. Achievement of the OHSP NVQ 4 provides the entry route to both Institutions. The IOSH route enables you to upgrade to Grad IOSH thence by Continuing Professional Development (CPD) assessment and Professional Interview/IOSH criteria to Chartered Member.

The NVQ process is based on sufficiency of underpinning knowledge, experience and the ability to put theory into competent performance at the workplace. All applicants must hold a Level 3 Safety Qualification e.g. NEBOSH Certificate, NVQ 3 or an equivalent and experience as shown below. Candidates are registered with City and Guilds and undertake the development of a portfolio under the guidance of their assessor. Either scheme requires joint planning on achievement timescales, additional knowledge necessary and proof of experience by the provision of evidence e.g. Risk assessments, Inspections, Audits etc. Unlike NEBOSH Diploma there are no examinations but your assessor will identify areas where additional knowledge is necessary and question you accordingly. The NVQ route provides thorough preparation to progress by Open Assessment, CPD Points, and Board Interview to Chartered Membership.

Scheme A
Safety Practitioners with at least five years experience

Persons who can prove at least five years as a full time Safety Practitioner can apply to be registered with City and Guilds and will then undertake an initial interview. Subject to acceptance an Action Plan will be based upon an agreed completion target time of between nine to twelve months. Five days underpinning knowledge enhancement by attendance on selected NEBOSH Diploma elements will be identified plus distance/e-learning. It will be essential to register with IOSH for Continuing Professional Development at the commencement of the programme in order to progress from Grad IOSH to Chartered Status at a later stage. The candidate will have access to their assessor or other support as may be required. This scheme assumes the ability to write narratives and reports in a clear and precise style. The programme provides total preparation and advice to upgrade to IOSH Chartered Membership.

Pre-entry criteria are for the applicant to hold a Level 3 qualification in Occupational Health and Safety e.g. NEBOSH General/Construction certificate, NVQ3 in Health and Safety at Work.

The programme will consist of an introductory interview during which personal planning/achievement will take place, an assessment of additional knowledge requirements and detailed guidance on portfolio development and personal achievement timescales. Candidates will then work with their Assessor/Adviser on a one to one basis to identify up to ten training days by attendance at selected NEBOSH Diploma modules. Individuals progress to target achievement dates agreed with their assessor. This will normally be between twelve to fifteen months from commencement of the programme. When the award is fully achieved i.e. 10 units the person will be graded by IOSH as ‘Grad IOSH’ this was the former ‘IOSH member’ level. All candidates must register with IOSH for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) on entry to the programme as progression to Chartered Member status relies on two years CPD and IOSH criteria.
