IOSH Safety for Senior Executives

Senior executives are those who provide strategic leadership, direction and oversight, and set the policy on health and safety for their organisation. The course can be tailored to meet your organisations specific requirements e.g. Senior Civil and Public Servants, Education Administrators. It is designed to fulfil the needs of persons who are conscious of their personal and corporate responsibilities on health and safety issues but who in practice do not have the time to dedicate to detailed study.

The course aims to provide senior executives of organisations with an understanding of their health and safety role and how this should influence their strategic thinking and holistic risk management systems / procedures.

Module 1 – Aims and objectives

  • Overview and introduction to the programme

Module 2 – Senior Executives’ health and safety responsibilities

  • The moral and legal case for effective health and safety management, and the role played by directors 

Module 3 – Corporate governance and health and safety

  • The business case for effective management of health and safety risk, including the ‘hidden’ costs of failure and the requirements for annual reporting

Module 4 – Management Systems

  • Understanding the requirements for effective health and safety management, its principles and its strategic implementation

 The Programme deals with the essentially integrated nature of health and safety as a management function, the financial implications of accidents and ill-health, current legislation, legal penalties including corporate manslaughter, the required documentation, root causes of accidents, the importance of risk assessment, requirements for the appointment of competent persons. Assessment The course will conclude with a brief assessment.
