COMPANY DEVELOPMENTS

Activities in the UK and aboard have developed considerably during the past year, extending the range of qualifications and courses available. As well as our regular programs as included in the website and brochure, accreditation from City & Guilds has now been awarded for the revised and updated versions of standards for Level 3, 4 & 5 Health and Safety, Cleaning and Support Services (Level 2), Construction Site Supervisions (Level 3), Business and Administration (Levels 2 &3) and NVQ (A1) Assessors Award (Level 3).

RESULTS

Safety Solutions’ NEBOSH Diploma students continue to achieve excellent results and we are looking forward to Graduation Day in July 2009.  Our current pass rate for student who have completed all units is 87% and we are confident that this will be maintained when our current students submit their Unit D assignments in March. Gill Tweedale-Sexton is the programme facilitator as well as being a Director of Safety Solutions and Director and Trustee of NEBOSH.  The overall high quality of tutors and her personal support is reflected in the following comments by students:

“I just wanted to let you know that I am extremely grateful for all of you help, support, guidance and most of all patience and encouragement since starting the Diploma course…

…It seems like I’ve been on a very long road and it feels good to have finally reached my destination.  I appreciate it is only the start of my professional development, but the course has given me a phenomenal insight into the world of safety”

“Thank you and your Safety Solutions team for dragging me through completing the Diploma course.  I am of course very happy that it is at last over and appreciative of the support given throughout what seems an eternity”

We also continue to achieve high pass rates at Certificate level with many students returning to take other certificate units or embark on the Diploma.

One student wrote:

“Hopefully I’ll be back to do more courses so you’re not rid of me yet
"

We congratulate both Mike Keeley and another of his students Claire Burroughs, who gained the highest marks in the NEBOSH Construction Certificate. This is the fifth time in the last six years that one of Mike’s students has achieved this success.

As a result of the continuing high pass rate in the Diploma and the students who have completed the NVQ 4 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice, 168 candidates have achieved Grad IOSH membership status with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health.

TRAIN TO GAIN

The Health and Safety Executive have emphasised the importance of training employees who have been allocated health and safety responsibilities. IOSH Managing Safely and NEBOSH National Certificates provide the theory but the person must be able to have the ability to put the theory into practice in the workplace. Academic qualifications in health and safety should be linked or followed by a competence qualification for example a City & Guilds NVQ 3 in Occupational Health and Safety. The Government ‘Train to Gain’ scheme through the learning and Skills Council enables Employers to provide this essential qualification full or part funded subject to LSC Eligibility. Person who need additional knowledge i.e. IOSH Working Safely or similar programmes.
The LSC scheme enables companies to nominate candidates who do not hold Level 2 or 3 qualifications to be funded to achieve the appropriate NVQ at no cost for achievement but underpinning knowledge is required, Therefore candidates who already hold an IOSH Managing Safely Certificates (Level 2) will be funded.
